How is Alexandria Friends School different from other schools?
As a Friends School, we seek to live out Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship in our life together as a community of learners. We focus on teaching students how to think rather than memorizing facts.

Can I visit the school to see if it's right for my child?
Of course! Please come to one of our open houses or call 703-461-7222 for an appointment to see the school.

What grades are taught at AFS?
For 2012-2013 we will offer grades 6 and 7; each year thereafter we will add grades through grade 12 (projected date for reaching grade 12: 2017-18).

How big is the school?
To build the kind of community we seek, we are small by design. Our long-range goal is to have up to 60 students in our high school and 45 in our middle school. Next year's 6th and 7th grade will have from 10-15 students.

Is the school accredited?
The Virginia Association of Independent Schools requires that a school have existed for five years before the accreditation process can begin. We intend to apply as soon as we are eligible and ready to meet the requirements; we already meet most of the criteria for accreditation.

Will I get a High School Diploma?

Yes, of course! AFS is qualified to issue high school diplomas in the Commonwealth of Virginia just as is any other Virginia independent school.

Do your students go on to college?
Of the seven students we have graduated since 2007, all have gone on to college.

Do you admit part-time home-schooled students?
Yes! Please see "For Homeschoolers" under "About AFS".

What is the tuition?
Our tuition remains an affordable $19,395, well below the average for our market. There is also a student account fee of $800.

Is financial aid available?
Yes. Families apply on line through TADS for an income evaluation (paper and pen applications are also available). We offer need-based scholarships based on the outcome of the evaluation.

How do I apply for admission?
Families apply on line through TADS (paper and pen applications are also available). The application consists of basic information on the form, plus four recommendations, transcript(s) from previous school(s), and interviews with the applicant and the family.

How do I update my information in your records?
Once you have begun the application you can access your information directly with TADS, and update it on line. Otherwise, just inform the office and we will update the TADS records for you.

Where is the school located, and how can I contact you?
We are in the Beth El Hebrew Congregation building at 3830 Seminary Road in Alexandria, just one mile east off I-395. We are also a short bus ride up from the King Street Metro Station (blue and yellow lines). Please call 703-461-7222 or e-mail us at info@afriends.org.
