Alexandria Friends School Curriculum
In addition to the regular course offerings listed below, AFS offers its students two unique learning opportunities, Service Learning and Senior Project. For each year of enrollment, each student completes forty hours of service to the community by working on a service learning project during the Winter Trimester. Seniors in good standing may elect to do a senior project in the spring.
Regular Course Offerings
We are on a trimester schedule which allows students more course options for the year as we offer both year-long* and trimester-long classes. Students are required to take five classes each trimester. In addition, all students are required to complete 40 hours of service learning during the winter trimester.
Because we are a small school, we are able to customize our class offerings to the needs and interests of our students. Also, faculty are encouraged to create electives according to their interests and specialties, as well as the needs and interests of our students. If approved, highly-motivated students may complete independent studies or on-line courses under the supervision of our talented and multi-dimensional faculty.
Courses We Offer
We are developing a new STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum for next year's 6th and 7th grades in conjunction with other Friends schools around the country. This will include use of the iPad or a similar tablet device. STEM courses will be integrated with English and social studies classes.
